How Do Pendulums Work? A Beginner’s Guide to Pendulum Divination
What is a Pendulum?
A Pendulum is a weighted object attached to a cord or chain, most commonly Pendulums are made with Natural Crystals attached to a metal chain. You can use your Pendulum for the purpose of divination, dowsing (works best with yes/no questions & for locating lost items), or if you’re a Charmed fan, they called it scrying. 💫
How to work with a Pendulum?
Firstly it’s always good practice to cleanse your space before any witchy practice occurs, and there’s many methods to do so!
Smoke cleansing. I recommend using an incense stick, or sage.
Place your Pendulum outside under a Waxing or Full Moon to charge the energy, or under a Waning or Balsamic Moon to cleanse and clear energy. Make some Moon Water under the phase and astrological influence of your choosing, you can use this to charge or cleanse your Pendulum with that specific energy whenever its needed (just be careful of getting the chain wet if it’s metal).
Keep your Pendulum on a Selenite charging plate in-between uses. Satin Spar works too, but true Selenite is preferable.
In a pinch, my favourite way to cleanse an object or space is to connect with my higher-self, request for the space to be cleared, and to work with my higher-self only. You can work with any deity, but it’s best to form a relationship with them first, by learning about them and to give offerings before making requests. You can always trust and work with your higher-self.
No matter what magic you’re engaging in, it’s always best to do it with calm emotions and a clear state of mind.
Establish parameters. You can ask or tell your Pendulum what Yes, No, and Not Now means. Your Pendulum may swing or spin in a particular direction to confirm its answer.
Hold your Pendulum at the very end of its chain, between your thumb and index finger, leaving the weighted object to move freely.
Which one should I choose?
If you’re choosing a Pendulum online, you might choose one based on the material, such as a specific crystal, wood, or metal. Or maybe you choose based on its shape, or carvings. Most Pendulums end on a point, to direct energy, and point to an answer.

If you’re picking out a pendulum in person, there’s a chance you’ll find them hanging in shop. Try to focus your energy first before running your open palm under the Pendulums—see if your energy causes a Pendulum to begin swinging or circling; if so the Pendulum has found a connection with you. ✨
